Together, ILO, CIF and Carney will guide families and organizations through the New Futures Initiative training, a specialized program designed to help families create networks of support, find and secure financing, real estate, etc. and build the community partnerships that will enable family members to live inclusive and independent lives.

Specifically, the New Futures Initiative is a series of four workshop sessions, workshop materials, and onsite consultation to family groups. Throughout the course of this training program, participating families learn how to replicate CIF’s Community Living Option (CLO) housing model. The CLO housing model is built on CIF’s Philosophy of Support, which focuses on community building and the individual’s right to choice, experience, responsibility, and relationships. Each CLO residence is grounded in community building while fostering individual choice and exploration. The CLO also provides on-site support and staff to help residents with emergencies, and also with the ongoing development of independent living skills.

The first phase of the NFI training, days 1 and 2, takes place in Evanston, Illinois and introduces residents to the concept of community building/partnerships, and facilitates presentations on asset mapping, real estate, legal ownership options, affordable housing development, etc.  During this portion of the training, participants are also able to visit CIF, meet with the self-advocates that have achieved independent living, and visit a CLO residence.

Phase 2 (days three and four) takes place in the community in which the housing will be created. During this phase, CIF trainers focus on helping participants decide on housing criteria, support services criteria, and fundraising, as well as progressing in planning in a number of different areas related to the housing development.
