ILO Community Events

At Community Group, our goal is to welcome individuals with disabilities and their families into the Integrated Living Opportunities (ILO) network. We want to help you make connections, build relationships and create the personal support networks that are the building blocks of our organization. ILO is all about communities – and we want to welcome you into ours.

At Community Group, we know that one of the best ways to build communities is to socialize, form relationships, participate in bonding experiences and – above all – have fun together! Our Community Group events – hosted in partnership with the Eldavitch DCJCC (The Jewish Community Center in D.C.) – are the perfect way for self-advocates and their families to join in ILO’s community, meet new people, and begin creating friendships and relationships.

Our first presentation in January will be a discussion on Maryland’s ABLE program. The purpose of the meeting is an overview of the Maryland ABLE program and to help people sign up for ABLE at the meeting. We will be providing materials, advice and will be available to help to set up an ABLE account. Representatives from ABLE in Baltimore will also be available to answer questions. The people in Baltimore refer to this an “ABLE Popup” event.

In February, we will host our second event – A presentation on What is ILO? In the presentation we will introduce the concept of community based living, based on ILOs unique definition, the impact of the Community Builder and how ILO is creating communities in Washington, DC and Montgomery County.

In March, our topic will be Supported Decision Making. What is supported decision making? Why is it a preferable alternative to guardianship? How does supported decision making change the way people view the rights of individuals with disabilities, and how can the process of supported decision-making help protect these rights? Look forward to an informative presentation that answers these questions, and also provides insight on how supported decision making can be an important option for your family member with disabilities.
